Tortoiseshell Details

The use of the shell of the tortoise, specifically the Hawksbill sea turtle, was prevalent in ancient Greece and Rome. In the use of ornamental items such as tables, mirrors, boxes and combs. The use of the actual shell came to a complete stop in the 1970’s as well as the trade of it entirely to save the animals from extinction.

The beautiful aesthetic though has not come to an end at all.  Coming to life on walls, tiles, furniture, and objects for the home. The same effect of the shell design was able to be reproduced using glass. The artisans use a variety of colors marbled together in order to create the same distinguishable look of the patterns of tortoiseshell.

We wanted to bring back this style as we feel it is such an essential pattern that traverses any trends. A great compliment to existing homeware designs as well as new ones to come. Here at ecru, we created a set of four tumblers as an addition to your table. As well as two bulbously round brass rimmed vases.
